Legally recognized in 2010, Intepreters United / AFSCME Council 28 (WFSE) is the first labor union in the US for freelance interpreters. However, there are other unions out there representing both freelance and staff interpreters.

• Staff court interpreters in New York State are organized under AFSCME Council 37, Local 1070 Court Interpreter Chapter.
• Freelance healthcare interpreters in Oregon are organized under AFSCME Council 75.
• Staff court interpreters in California are organized under CWA Local 39000 California Federation of Interpreters.
• Court Interpreters in Cook County, Illinois, are organized under the Chicago News Guild.
• The international professional association AIIC has several collective bargaining agreements covering freelance interpreters working with international organizations.
• Many staff interpreters working in hospitals have joined already established bargaining units covering other types of hospital workers (e.g. Harborview Medical Center).
