PARKING is available on the street and there is no charge on the weekends.

Approved for 3 hours of Continuing Education by DSHS/LTC (General Credits) and by WA AOC (Performance Skills)

Certificates of attendance will be awarded to all 3-hour attendees. There is no credit for late arrivals or early departures.

This workshop is available to all Interpreters United members at no cost. Non-members can sign up to become a union member by downloading, signing and returning the membership form, or can sign up at the door, if desired.

TO REGISTER, attendees shall send an email to Local1671[at]gmail.com with the following information:

A.      Full name as it appears on the DSHS/LTC database which can be updated by sending an email to dshsct[at]dshs.wa.gov.

B.      DSHS Certificates' number as they appear in the DSHS/LTC online database. They should include the two letters and all numbers (including all zeroes). MC (Medical Certified), MA (Medical Authorized), SC (Social Services Certified), SA (Social Services Authorized), TC (Translator Certified).

C.      City and county of residence.

D.      Working languages.

E.      Confirmation of successful registration will be sent by email.

If you are court certified, please indicate the state and the certificate number (e.g. WA AOC 99999)

CARPOOLING. Please send your request to carpool to local1671[at]gmail.com. 

TRAVEL EXPENSES. Airfare, mileage (carpools are encouraged) and hotel lodging (for members coming from far away) will be covered if needed by WFSE only if you attend Interpreter Lobby Day on Friday January 26th.  Lodging is supposed to be pre-approved on a case-by-case basis. To qualify, please sign up online on WFSE’s website at Lobby Days RSVP. You will get an email confirmation and a reminder. If only attending the statewide meeting on Saturday January 27th, then your travel expenses will be covered by Local 1671 pursuant to Policy #1 provisions below. For any questions, please contact our Treasurer Olga Cepeda at aglocepeda[at]gmail.com.

1. Hotel/Motel Stay for Local 1671 Members

1.A Pre-approval. All overnight hotel/motel stays shall be limited to the night preceding the statewide meeting and must be approved in advance by the President. To qualify for approval, the union meeting must be more than 150 miles one way from the member’s residence and shall be limited to a maximum of $120.00.

1.B Occupancy. Default hotel room occupancy is set to double occupancy (two members at least). Local 1671 can only reimburse for union members’ expenses.

1.C Procedure. Send your request at least TEN (10) calendar days in advance to Local1671President[at]gmail.com, confirming in writing your commitment to volunteer at the statewide meeting and workshop by reporting directly to Events Coordinator, Secretary and/or Council Representative.

1.D Confirmation. President will reply to the requesting member via email, carbon copying (cc) Treasurer and Events Coordinator. The response will include volunteering details.

1.E Submission. In order to receive reimbursement, member must attach the hotel’s receipt to the Member Expense Form. This receipt must present the names of the occupants

2. Mileage Reimbursements

2.A. Documentation. To request for mileage reimbursement, members must complete a Member Expense Form on the day of the quarterly statewide local meeting.

2.B Reimbursement. Mileage will be reimbursed at 25% of the IRS standard business rate per mile for members traveling more than 100 miles total round trip. Distances covered to pick up carpooling members are allowed. This rate will apply for two (02) years and will expire on August 31, 2019 2.C Cut off. When requests for mileage reimbursement exceed $1000, the Treasurer shall inform local members in writing that their request has been delayed.

3. Tolls & Ferry. Attach original receipts to the Member Expense Form.

4. Rental Cars. Where there is a clear necessity, car rental can be requested for a minimum of five (5) union members. There will be no reimbursement for mileage. All car rentals must be pre-approved. Send your request at least TEN (10) calendar days in advance of the next Executive Board Meeting by sending an email to Local1671[at]gmail.com. To receive reimbursement, attach confirmation email, rental receipt and gasoline receipt to the Member Expense Form.

5. Exceptions. Any exception to this policy must be pre-approved by the executive board more than 48 hours before the meeting takes place

COURSE OUTLINE 

1) Overview of the three Modes of Interpreting: Consecutive, Simultaneous and Sight Translation

2) Considerations: 

  • What mode for which scenario?
  • Protocols around the use of each mode.
  • What about summarization? Yes? No? How?

3) Overview of the cognitive skills required for each of the modes

4) Practice suggestions to develop such cognitive skills.

Trainer's Bio:

Sofía García-Beyaert, PhD, is an interpreter, interpreter trainer and researcher in language access policy. She studied conference interpreting at the Universidad de Granada, in Spain and is one of the authors of the pioneering book The Community Interpreter: An International Textbook. Sofia taught postgraduate and master’s classes on interpreting skills-building at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona before moving to Seattle.
