2020 Interpreter Bills
Updated On: May 20, 2021

When compared with other Individual Providers (e.g. Home Health or Childcare workers), interpreters have a very restrictive scope of bargaining. Under current state law, Language Access Providers (spoken language interpreters) are limited to bargain only over economic compensation, professional development, grievance process, and union-management committee meetings.

SB 6207 / HB 2691:Concerning the scope of collective bargaining for language access providers would expand the scope of bargaining to include healthcare benefits and other economic matters. It also required state agencies HCA, DSHS, DCYF, DES and L&I to submit reports to the legislature by December 2020.

Status: HB2691 was signed into law by the Governor on April 2, 2020 becoming effective on June 11, 2020.
